Jury finds man guilty of murderAPPLETON (AP) — A juryselected in Eau Claire County found a former Appleton man guilty Friday night of killing an 18-year-old waitress who was raped, strangled and dumped by a roadside11 years ago.The jury deliberated about 5'/6 hours before convicting James A.Duquette Jr., 32, of first-degree murder in the slaying of Anne Marie Preimesberger.Duquette, already serving a life prison term in Massachusetts for hi kidnapping and rape of a 13-old girl at Southampton, Mass., faces a mandatory' life sentence. He never took the stand in his weeklong trial.He was accused of killing Preimesberger in the early hours ofApril 4, 1980, in the back seat ofhis car and dumping her body near a highway overpass in the Town ofGrand Chute.The jury , chosen Monday in Eau Claire because of pre-trial publicity in the Appleton area, began deliberating about 4:30 p.m. Fridav.Outagamie County Circuit Judge Dennis Luebke scheduled sentencing at 9 a.m. Monday. Duquette was expected to be returned to prison in Massachusetts after sentencing.Duquette bowed his head and showed little emotion as the verdict was read, but his mother, Phyllis Duquette of Appleton, objected loudly when the jury’s decision was announced.District Attorney John Des Jardins welcomed the verdict.“It’s really satisfying to see that a case as difficult as this has resulted in a guilty verdict,’' he said.Earlier Friday, defense attorneys hammered away at the credibility of Jeffrey Whitman, the man who first implicated Duquette in v pnesb^rtfer's slaving.
