mental■ ■ ■By Kerry Haglund The AmericanA District Court judge approved psychiatric and psychological testing of a 39-year*old Odessa man who is charged with attempted capital murder in the April 29 shooting of an Ector County Sheriff's deputy.Terry Phillip Walls, 4045 Cypress Road, is scheduled to undergo examination June 14 by Dr. Richard E. Coons and psychologist George Parker, 'bothof Austin.Judge Gene Ater the 70th District Court granted Odessa defense attorney Jim Jordan’s request for the examinations Monday, and ordered a written report by July 7 that is to include observations and findings pertaining to the defendant’s insanity defense.Meanwhile, Ater said he’s scheduled to preside over a pre-trial hearing in the case onJune 15.Walls likely will testify at that hearing, said Jordan, who Tuesday filed about a dozen motions including one to suppress Walls’ statement to authorities the night of the shooting.Jordan alleges hospital officials refused to remove a bullet lodged in Walls right shoulder because Walls was too intoxicated for doctors to safely administer anesthesia. He also maintains that his client was too intoxicated to give the statement deputies obtained from him that same night.In all, two statements were taken and Walls was too intoxicated during the first one to knowingly waive his right to counsel.
