03£TElgin Courier: Ilenry McCabe, who escaped from the Elgin insane asylum laBt Friday, was captured Thursday at Van Buren street and Pacific avenue. McCabe, In May, 1887, robbed and murdered a lawyer named James 1$. Howard, of Valparaiso, Indiana, while on a visit to a friend inChicago. Howard had been in com-%pany with his friend during the day and had imbibed just enough liquor to make him unusually sociable when he fell in wiih McCabe. Not knowing the thoroughly disreputable character of his chance acquaintance, Howard made friends with him, paid for in* numerable drinks and was finally persuaded to accompany him on a short walk. It was about 10 o’clock at night that Howard's body was discovered by a patrolman near the intersection of Twenty-second and Hal-sted streets. On the head were large gashes produced by a heavy coupling pin laying close by. The dead man’s hat was missing, and it was seen on McCabe that same night, but he took pains to keep out of the way at the time. Five days later McCabe was arrested and within a period of two months was sentenced to eight years in the penitentiary. When b ut eighteen months in the penitentiary the inur. derer became insane and was removed ,lo the Elgin asylum.
