A Gulfport man has been Indicted for illegally purchasing and possessing two handguns last year, federal court records showed Monday in Biloxi.James Curtis Bennett of 3913 Sierra Dr., Gulfport, wascharged by a federal grand jury with lying on a federalfirearms purchase form when he said he had never beenconvicted of a felony.The indictment said the 51-year-old Bennett purchaseda .25-caliber pistol in October 1976 and a .22-caliber revolver the following month at a Gulfport gunstore. On the purchase form the Gulfport man said he had never been convicted of a felony, a crime punishable by morethan a year in prison, which the indictment claims hehas.Bennett is also charged with illegally possessing thetwo guns.The Gulfport man has pleaded innocent to three of the four charges and indicated he would plead guilty to possessing one of the guns. He is awaiting a hearing beforeU.S. District Judge Harold Cox.
