The affair areated the most intense exaitement iu the village and many stories were In circulation regarding it.As soon a a help oonld be given him Steffen was taken to his home and Dr. Ycat of Linden, was summoned. Steffen consented and threw hisopponent. Iq arising Steffen trod onI Pflrmao’s toes and tore the latter’s oot.This angered Pflrman, and in a soddenaccess of fnry he whipped out hie knifeand stabbed Steffen, the blade penetratingi the left long. Steffen, pursued by Pflrman,ran down to the railroad, wherehe BaDk to the ground. Pflrman’s littleson who was a witness to the affair ranand gave the alarm at Steffen’s residence. Pflrman advanced to tbe prostrate man as if to kill him outright while they were alone, whereupon, summoning his remaining strength, Steffen arose and ran some diatanoe, when Pflrman halted and beat a retreat. Steffen’s father hastened to tbe scene and met Pflrman who brandished his knife and threatened to kill the father, who retreated, Pflrman going homo.Pflrman is a vetejan of the Franco-Prnssian war and has been a resident of this oonntry only six years. He has encountered financial reveries, losing all he owned and this, ooupled with the faot that be is a heavy drinker, Is thought to have rendered him mentally unsonnd. He is 48 yeara of age while the victim of his assault is 27.
