Witness: Duquette had smirk on faceAccused murderer James Duquette, 32, went on trial Tuesday in Appleton.APPLETON (AP) — James A.Duquette Jr. had a “smirk on his face” while listening to a waitress plead for her life before she was raped and strangled in the back seat of a car, a trial witness said.Duquette, 32, accused of first-degree murder of 18-year-old Anne Preimesberger, was identified Tuesday in Outagamie County Circuit Court by one of two other men convicted, of roles in the 1980slaying.Defense attorney Ken Bowman of Green Bay argued District Attorney John Des Jardins was using testimony of ‘ ‘ j a i 1 h o u s e snitches” and the plea-bargained testimony of the two other men to frame Duquette.Lou Dahlman,prison® sentence! Preimesbergertestified that Duquette instigated the attack after they picked up Preimesberger as she walked home from work at a tavern.Dahlman said he drove the car as Duquette beat the woman and tore her clothes.“At that point, she said she’d do anything he asked but just don’t kill her,” Dahlman testified. “I turned, looked in the rear of the car and stared at Jim. He had a half smirk on his face.”Duquette was returned to Wisconsin for the trial after he was sentenced to life in prison in Massachusetts for abducting and raping a 13-year-old girl.Dahlman, 34, and Jeffrey Whitman, 32, were convicted in thePreimesberger case and agreed to testify against Duquette.Dahlman said Duquette ordered him to drive off a road and forced him to rape the woman. Dahlmansaid he then passed out because he had been drinking heavily.When he regained consciousness, he said, Preimesberger was dead and Duquette was bragging that he killed her.“There was a hole in the middle of her chest and dried blood was streaming down from it.
