Dry Rio Grande ForcesWater Crisis on LaredoLAREDO, Tex., June 5 —UP— A waterworks official Friday urged the citizens of Laredo, whose water supply is fast vanishing, to stop using water except for the most essential purposes.The official, Charles E. Richter Jr., chairman of the board of the Laredo waterworks system, said that if it is necessary, an ordinance can be passed in three hours that will force people to stop wasting water.The Rio Grande, from which the eity gets its water supply, has run dry for the first time in history at Laredo. Upstream, at the Laredo water plant, there was no flow Friday and the pool from which the city’s water supply was being pumped was rapidly being depleted.Across the international boundary, in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, May-for the 40 miles of its bank under authority from the federal government, forbade all irrigation pumping up and down the Rio Grande fo the 40 miles of its bank under his jurisdiction.He sent police out Friday to enforce the order. In Nuevo Laredo itself, all lawn sprinkling and car washing was forbidden and private and public swimming pools were closed. Allen Shivers Thursday night to try to do something about the water emergency.
