Working on a supply of bullets for target practice are, left to right, Police Chief Warren Meliek, Patrolman Lawrence Hus-er and Patrolman James Minary. Patrolman Minary is operating the powder measuring machine, Chief Melick is removing a primer from a fired case and Patrolman Huser is removing newly molded bullets from the bullet mold. Between the chief and Patrolman Minary is a board of used cases ready to be refilled with powder. The hotplate is used fc*r remolding the lead. In front of the hotplate can be seen the bullet resizing machine. An economical move has been and elbow grease — they canproduce their own bullets at the rate of approximately 40 an hour and at a cost of about one centmade by Greensburg’s city police department with the installation of equipment to manufacture its own ammunition.Incentive for the project came when officers found ammunition a rather expensive item when it came to target practice—a nearnecessity in the life of a law enforcement officer. So, at their own expense, together with the donations of a powder gauge and a bullet resizing machine by A1 Doerfling-er, local sporting goods store manager, the manufacturing of their 6wn ammunition has become areality.Through use of their own facilities — that of the equipmentcacn. It was pointed out that in the initial batch of ammunition each round cost approximately 1% cents due to the purchase of lead for the bullets. However, with this lead remolded after its use at the target range the cost will be reduced to about one cent.A target range is now being inst;i lied by the officers on ground owned by the county and located south of the city park road on the east bank of Muddy Fork creek. The ammunition manufactured by the officers may be fired from any gun that uses .38 caliber special cartridges.Equipment required for the making of their own ammunition includes a reloading and resizing machine, powder gauge, fired bullet cases, primers, powder and melting pot.The process of making a bullet is as follows: Remove the old primer and resize the fired case, install a new primer, lubricate the case, put in new powder, mold the lead bullet, size and lubricate bullet, seat the bullet in the ease and crimp the case. - It was pointed out that on a mass production basis it requires approximately 1V2 minutes for each round of ammunition.
