McClellan, D Ark . that the Justice Department had ‘uncovered evidence that local numbers operators had almost everv member of the city's vice squad on their payroll.”He also said “the involvement of the police went so far as to include pressure by the chief of the squad put on a dissident gambler to bring him in linewith his fellow numbers opera-4 ' *tors.Wilson appeared before the ubcommittee on behalf of President Nixon s proposal to make it a federal crime to conspire to obstruct enforcement of local and state criminal laws in order to promote an illegal gamblingbusiness.He said there is a need for such a statute on grounds of widespread police corruption in several major urban areas.Specifically, he named a “ma jor southern city —the Nashville Tennessean quoted him asBrownwood Jaycees Attend Angelo MeetTwo from Brown wo*1 attended the Texas Jaycees local presidents conference in San Angelo this past weekend. The were local Jaycee president Jay Slay-maker and imer-club director Curtis Butler.Goals and programs for the coming Jaycee year were discussed and finalized. Over 160 Jaycee presidents from all over the state attended.The meeting was hosted by the San Angelo Jaycees. Charlie Watkins, a former Brownwood resident, is president of the club. Bill White, San Angelo inter-club director, is also a former Brownwood resident.referring to Nashville—that has had an open history of policecorruption over the past 18years.“Police there were being paid off by lottery operators andbookmakers, Wilson charged, and in 1964 it was learned thattwo city detectives were actually operating a lottery.In Columbus. Capt Robert Taylor, vice squad chief, denied any connection with crime figures.I am absolutely not taking any money from anyone. I do not want to dignify their charge cannot speak for anyone else But if an officer is taking he will be prosecuted ” Mayor Maynard E Sensen-brenner called for a full report from Columbus Safety Director Fred Simon and Police Chief Robert H. Baus.■ I've got confidence in my police department and my safety director,” Sensenbrenner said It I find any evidence ofwrongdoing on the part of thepolice, we’ll get rid of them .”In Nashville, the Tennessean quoted Henry Petersen, head of the organized crime section. aesaying Wilson s testimony referred to the situation in the past and did not reflect on current Nashville officials.
