Angry Firemen Put University Off LimitsCHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.f June 3 (AP)—City manager Seth Burnley said this city and its volunteer fire company was considering withdrawing its fire protection from the University .of Virginia after i firemen were greeted with a shower I of beer bottles and other abuse when they fought a blaze near afraternity house.Burnley said after a conference with Mayor Roscoe S. Adams and police and fire department officials that unless Dean Ivey F. Lewis ofthe university made arrangements to ship “roughnecks” responsiblefor the affair away from the university, the city would have to deny the school protection of the firedepartment.Fire Near Frat HouseFiremen and police said beer bottles and abuse were hurled at them by an estimated 250 students when firemen came to extinguish a huge brush fire set up in the center of the courtyard of a fraternity house. More than 50 beer bottles were thrown as firemen began to fight the blaze, officialssaid.Police were called and two carloads of reinforcements were summoned before the one and a half hour incident had ended.The local fire department consists of the chief and seven paid employees, who man booster pumps and other equipment in a volunteer company of between 60 and 65 men.Dr. John Lloyd Newcomb, president of the university, said an investigation was being made into the incident to determine who was responsible for turning in the alarm. He said he believed the entire incident was exaggerated, and that information available to him did not indicate any beer bottles had been thrown.
