• Bone Ibltf Sui Burtam Hang bya Bob.On the 27tl) nit., two horse thieves entered the town of Kokomo, Howard county,' Indiana, mounted on horses stolen frothe vicinity of Indianapolis, nod offeredthem for sale. The Sheriff, recognizingthe horses from s description in a handbill he had seen, ordered the meo to diemount. They refused, and one galloped away. The Other was surrounded by several citizens whom the Sheriff had called toyoyoinihis aid, when he drew a revolver and fired several timea. Two of the balls struckand fatally wounded two citizens, Rev.John Lowe and Nelson Cooper, both ofwhom died within an hour. The murdererstarted off on a gallop, but the saddle girthbreaking, he tumbled off in the street. Atthis juncture a returned soldier fired and shot the murderer through the hip, disabling him so that his capture was easy. This terrible deed of blood greatly exasperated the people of Howard county,and they resolved to inflict summary pun-wlheIfeaishment upon the murderer. Accordinglyon the following night, they organizedTH1Cthemselves into a band of about three hundred and surrounded the jail, which was guarded by the sheriff and his deputy alone, for they could get nobody to assist them in defending the murderer. TheevClitdcmob cut off the hinges of the door, drag-wAged the prisoner out, and at eleven o’clockat night, by torch-light, erected a rudescaffold; placed under it a dry goods box;adjusted a rope around the wretched man’sneck; kicked the box from under him, andallowed the body to remain suspended until morning, when it was taken down andlaUwclt;decently interred, the burial expensesbeing defrayed with a small sum of moneyfound on his person. The man met hisfate calmly, evincing no trepidation, anddeclaring his remorse for his terrible workso great as to render life a burden.
