Bingham's “fishing parson, j was convicted last night of the atatutory rape of a 14-year-old girl who accused him of fathering her baby.The clergyman heard the ver- I diet of a Superior Court jury with his head bowed but showed no emotion.Sentence Coming UpJudge Leonard Williams said he would sentence MacDougall later in the month. The clergyman was released in *15,000 bail.The penalty for statutory rape in Maine ia left to the discretion of the judge.Married and the father of four children. MacDougall has been pastor of the Bingham Congregational church since 1*53. /V» ardent fisherman, he preached an annual angler's sermon and wrote more than 200 short stories, most of them about fishing.He also wrote the widely circulated Dud Dean stories.A jury of seven women and five men deliberated seven hours after hearing MacDougall deny he ever had sexual relations with the teen-aged girl.The girl testified MacDougall had been intimate with her twice at his vacation home In Emden j last summer. She gave birth to a j daughter, she said, on April 27.
