BROUGHT IN V WAGON AND STRUNG UP, jJust then word wasLewis had been captured atHugenot, and was being brought into town in a wagon, and in less time than it takes to tell it, a crowd of 1,000 men had gathered and when a wagon,in which sat Lewis, bound securely, drove to the lockup, it was rounded, the officers were crowdedback, a rope was produced almost instantly, a noose was placed about Lewis’s neck, and willing hands seiz ed the rope and dragged the negro through Sussex into Main street,with the intention of taking him to McMahon’s residence for identification, but theinhadthemore eager crowd insisted that they right man and as cries of “Hang him!” “Hanghim! ’’ “ Lynch him!’’ came from all parts of the crowd, that by this time numbered 2,000, the principal actors in the scene stopped under a maple tree near the resi dence of Mr, Fowier and in spite of the protests of President Howell and other prominent citizens who counseled moderation, the rope was thrown over a limb, and Lewis waspulled up.At the end of four minutes thebody was lowered but there were stillsigns of life and it was again pulled up and allowed to hang for an hour and at 10:30 the body was cut down and taken to an undertaking establishment.DETAILS OF THE CAPTURE OF THEBRUTE,Waiter Coleman and Frank Southerland discovered Lewis on a canalguarding the lockup had assured the crowd that Foley would not be taken out until the hearing to-morrow.Arrangements had, however, beenmade with the Erie officials to take Foley to Goshen Jail and at 12:15 Erie train 6 was backed up from the depot to Sussex street and the prisoner was hurried down that street to the train underan escort of six policemen and constables, followed by a great crowd of people who only needed a leader to have made acharge on the officers and take a the man from them.
