He was brought to this city yesterday morning and lodged in jail. It is not known what the character of the proof against him is, but sufficient evidence, it is said, has been secured by the detective who has been here some days working up the case to warrant his arrest. It is rumored that the prisoner hasmade a confession of his guilt to the officers, but the terms, of the alleged confession don’t fit the case at all. GrandstafT is 25 years of age and has borne an exceedingly bard reputation up and down the Kickupoo l iver, where he has put in the last few years. Many depredations have been laid at his door, but he never was arrested for them. There is a good deal of excitement here, and an attempt to take the prisoner away for safety was abandoned because of threats of lynching if it was done. Still the air is full of lynching talk and a heavy guard is on hand at the jail, and the sheriff says there will be bloodshed if any lawless attempt to punish the prisoner is made.
