WISCONSINAndrew Grandatall Taken From Jail by aMob and Hung.Viroqua, W is., June 1.—Andrew Grandstaff was captured while in bed last night by a Pinkerton detective aud two local officers. Today the detectives pumped a lull confession out of him He intended to rob old man Drake, but was unable to make him disclose the place where the family valuables were hid. Thi9 led to his killing. Mrs. Drakeattempted to shoot Grandstaff and bekilled her iu the presence of her children. To prevent the little ones trom telling, he cut their throats. Grandstaff has been known as an ignorant but cunning and daring semi-desperado. Hehas been a participant in several affrays and the associate of hard characters. V ery little is known of his antecedents only that he was of illegitimate birth. As people were greatly excited, aud lynching was threatened, troops were promptlyordered out by Governor Rusk.At a late hour tonight one thousand determined men surrounded the jail, but the authorities refused to give up the prisoner. rIhe barricades were then overpowered. An hour was spent in breaking down the steel cage and then the prisoner fought with desperate furyagaiust all who sought to euter. The struggle did not last long, and he was taken out, bound band and foot, led to the porch below and there preparations were made to hang him. A rope was placed around his neck and the prisoner was asked what he had to say. He protested his innocence, but it was knowu that he had .made a lull confes sion in the afternoon, and he was not believed. At midnight the scene at the jail was horrible. The prisoner was covered with blood,having been terribly mangled while the steel cage was being battered down. He stood with a halter around his neck pleading for his life.At 12:45 the mol) hung the prisoner to a tree in front of the court house and then let him down to see if he would confess.Later—Grandstaff refused to make a confession to the lynchers and after som% time they strung him up again. When lowered the second time he wasdead.
