Trucker faces prison for attacking prostituteBy Jose MartinezAssociated Press WriterGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Longdistance trucker Larry Dean Carter was sentenced to 16-27 years’ imprisonment Thursday for the abduction, rape and attempted murder of a teen-age prostitute.“This is not a case that is one event leadingto several charges. What we have here is a series of crimes committed one after the other,” Kent County Circuit Judge H. David Soet said prior to sentencing.Carter, 36, of New London, Mo., pleaded guilty last month to kidnapping, first-degree .criminal sexual conduct, attempted murder andfelony use of a firearm stemming from the Feb. 28 attack.Carter had faced up tolife imprisonment, but reached a plea bargain with prosecutors that netted him less prison time. Soet sentenced him to two years on the weapons charge, followed by 14-25 years for the remaining counts. He now faces extradition to his home state to face charges in the slaying of an Illinois woman whose burned body was found in a ditch along the Mississippi River in January. In the Michigan case, the 19-year-old victim told police she agreed to have sex with Carter for$50. However, when she stepped into the truck, Carter and another man handcuffed and shackled her with leg irons bolted to the floor, then raped her.Carter later tried to kill the woman by filling the cab with propane gas at a service station in northern Kent', County But her screams drew attention and Carter sped off, police said.Carter was arrested hours later following a 16-mile, high-speed chase that ended just east of Grand Rapids. The second man, Charles Jenkins Jr., had been dropped off at a bus station earlier. Police traced him to Cleveland, where he was arrested in April.Jenkins, 38, of Joliet, 111., was convicted of third-degree criminal sexual conduct last weekby a Kent County jury. He faces up to 15 yearsin prison when sentenced.Police say they linked Carter to the Missout i slaying by matching dried blood found in his semi-tractor to the shooting victim, Valerie Ann Daniels. The woman was dead 12-36 hours before a boater spotted the body.Investigators said they believe Daniels was killed somewhere else before the body was dumped in the ditch. Daniels last was seenalive in Effingham, 111.
