Psychiatrist Tells Of Killing BlackoutA psychiatrist testified Tuesaav that admitted-killer John Lucero suffered an alcoholic blackout and has norecollection of shooting CieoCleveland in Redwood City March 21.The opinion was from Dr. Harvey Pirofskv of Palo Alto, a former chief of the alcoholism outpatient center at Agnews State Hospital.Pirofsky was scheduled to be cross-examined today by prosecutor John D. Garvic.Lucero, 32, and Harold Vigil, 36, both of Redwood City, are charged with murder in the rifle-shooting death of Cleveland as he rode hjs bicycle to work at 5:30 a.m. on March 21.Lucero's attorney Ronald Romines Tuesday told a jury and Superior Court Judge G, Brooks Ice that Lucero did shoot Cleveland, but was suffering from a blackout.Pirofsky said he based his decision on two interviews with Lucero and on information about Lucero's background.He doesn’t recognize thathe's an alcoholic, but I believe he is,” the psychiatrist said.Pirofskv said that black-outs are a common occurence for alcoholics. They experience something, or do something foolish or crazy, but have no memory of the blackout. ... To “others, they may appear not to be .drunk.”Garvic,-who rested his case Tuesday, has based the prosecution on his theory that Lucero was not mentally impaired by alcohol when Cleveland was killed.Homines also called one of Lucero’s 18- brothers and sisters, George A. Lucero. 29, of Denver, Colo.George Lucero told jurors that his brother began drinking heavily at age 17, ‘'When he was drinking, he was aggressive and irrational. He didn’t care what he was doing Or to whom he .was doing it. It was as if he had a dual personality. When he was sober, he was a nice guv who'd give you the shirt oft.his back.”
