Prison GuardLEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) — A disturbance erupted this morning at the U. S. Penitentiary here. Warden Loren Daggett said one prison guard has been killed and inmates were holding one to four other persons as hostages.The identity of the dead man was not immediately revealed.Daggett said an inmate called him from the prison laundry and said he was holding four persons hostage. The warden quoted the inmate as saying the hostages would not be hurt if “the warden and the press showed up.” It was first believed only another guard was being held.There was no indication whether the hostages were guards or other inmates.The weapon used to kill the guard was not known.
