While Postmaster C. J. Thompson was on his way to the post-office Wednesday he was met near the bridge crossing the Wabash railway on Clinton street,by Cora Prator, a young colored woman of North Defiance. She was armed with a buggy whip and with very few preliminaries began to use it on the postmaster. The blows were not forceful and did not do any damage.Mr. Thompson was seen at the postoffice shortly after the assault and gave out this statement:“I was met Wednesday by the young colored woman named ('ora Prator, corner Wabash avenue and Clinton street, just a short distance from my home. .She accosted me by saying: “Did you return my mail to Muskogee, Indian Territory?'’ and immediately proceeded to assault me. I do not understand the motives of the girl or what prompts her to act so. 1 understand she was arrested in Mansfield for fighting on the streets. She was graduated in the Defiance high school and was well treated by the white people of this city: but it seems that her education has wrought her injury instead of good.”In addition to the above statement the information is given out that the Prator girl has been writing letters to the postoffice department for some time about her mail being interfered withhere. There is nothing in that, but her letters finally became so lurid and abusive that on last Saturday an inspector was sent to this city to investigate the case.He found the writer was Cora, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Prator, colored, of North Defiance; that she was a graduate of the public schools. The inspector also visited the police department to learn what was known of the girl there and then left town.No sane person would think for a moment that Mr. Thompson or any of the postoffice employes would interfere in any way with the girl’s mail. Her letters to the department and assault upon the postmaster today are indicative of an unsound mind. The Prators heve been a strenuous family and have made an unenviable record in the past.A warrant was issued out of Mayor Cameron’s office Wednesday for the Prator girl, and she was arrested shortly afterwards on the street by Officer Tom Buchholz.W hen taken before the mayor the girl plead guilty and then asked for an attorney and Col. B. F. Enos was called in. Winn Hay appeared for Mr. Thompson. No action has jet been taken on the plea of guilty.
