Karen cracked into the machine with such force that it could muster a scant 934 majority for its candidate, Neblett, in Webb County.*Zapata County, which for years was merely a rubber stamp for the now impotent Independent Club machine, rared back and asserted its independence by thumbing its nose at ‘ the Laredo machine. Zapata County gave Kazen a 206 majority over the Independent Club candidate.Jim Hogg County also was con-temptous of further . Independent Club domination allowing Neblett but 231 votes while Kazen was amassing 1056. The trend continued over in Dimmit County which the machine had bragged would “be in the bag” for its candidate. Kazen there got 809 votes while the Independent Club candidate got 535.Sunday was a day of rejoicing all over the district, as news of Kazen’s victory spread. Hundreds of Lare-doans stayed up all night to celebrate and Kazen’s car couldn’t get down the street Sunday as people rushed out to congratulate him. In Hebbronville the demand for his appearance became so strong he was taken down there and given a great demonstration. 'As the campaign stood out in re view, the two largest ‘.boners' among the many pulled by* the In depenedent Club former bosses were being discussed. Narrowed down it was agreed two were tops. One was the address of County Judge M. J Raymond at the Independent Club rally which is known to have alienated several hundred voters. The other was the letter of William Galllgan, city superintendent schools to Kazen a few days before the campaign ended, in which Gal ligan expressed bis love and undy ing affection for the Independent Club.
