Four are dead. Five have been returned to the maximum .security Monkey Island. The big breaJv happened Tuesday night when a bolt of lightning splintered a tree at the Highiand Park Zoo and sent a big limb tumbling into Monkey Island.“Big Sam” and' “Old Moose/1 two long-term inhabitants of Monkey Island, were out on the limb and over the fence quick as you could skin a banana. Seven other chimps followed. The monkey hunt was on. A force o? 55 'policemen and the entire zoo staff was marshaled. Their arsenal was formidable— shotguns, 30-30's, tear gas and tranquilizer-tipped darts loaded inair guns.Crisp messages bristled on the police radio.“Send some help up here,” an officer called from a railroad yard. “We think there's one inside a gondola car.”“The Rescue League says it can’t use its lassoes on chimps.” cautioned another. “You can’t tell what might happen to the man on the other end.”So it went. Operation Monkey— man against beast. But at last the will of man prevailed.Four of the 5400 chimps strayed too close to' residential areas and were shot. Zoo officials ordered them' killed for fear they would attack a youngster if cornered. Old Moose was one to take his place in the monkey hereafter.By late Wednesday, the remaining five chimps were paraded forlornly back to Monkey Island. Among them was Big Sam, who was tranquilized by an air gun needle.A none-too-happy ending to a j f madcap, 16-hour “Abba Dabba Honeymoon.»
