la Cross© and her Jtilrumta. The JPrmrio Du Chien Cfounfir is surprised at our “alarming coolness” up hero on the subject of si railroad from La Crosse lo Prairie Du Chiun arid Dun Mill, andwys:4*IFLn Crosse gets sleepy and wishes to sleep and dream over her futureSreatncSxS and glory, she will awake toe painful reality that wo did not buildhtr a vond, but rent it off into Northern lawn ami Southern Minnesota, where it belonged.”Wo uni “cool” up here, neighbor, j on the subject of railroads, but you muri remember that of late, our fiery energies have been directed to forming vigilance committee* nnd the moral purification of the town; anti you .would b« lurpriwd on coming here, to find we wero having not more limn two figbtf and one robbery u day, wKerens before, we were thankful to have one once a month. This mob spirit is working admirably. As to railroads, wo arc looking piv* I ti«nl1y, but certainly* to I lie completion of the jo ad from Milwaukee to Ln Crease; that done, and we know tlmt u?e hohi the key io most of tho great north western travel. The Courier understands this as well as wo do, and has the sharpness to see that the travel from Chicago to St. Paul will strike the Mississippi at this place; hcnc® they arc excited nnd disturbed at Prairie Du Chico, while wo are coot at La Crosse. We have seen allusion in other papers to the quiet shown by La Crosse papers, as to her railroad interest. Wo have been more quiet so far, for the rewon that outside interests are dcinrj ihe talking fur us. Tor instance, tho Prairie Du Ctiien Courivr is continually talking up the Mississippi road to La Chossk. Bud Ax and Grant comrty papers sav the route is perfectly fon* eib!o, and there must bo a road from Richmond, or some point on the Wisconsin, direct to La Cstossv. AH the papers in the country are posted about the groat road building from Milwaukee and Madison, to La Citosw. The Jackson county paper is putting through the road from that pine® to La Ckosms. Prescott and Buffalo county papers are running the road from the St. Croix to La CnossE, Minnesota papers, of course, are looking out for their great land grant road from Sf. Peters to La Crescent, which is nearly the same as lo La Chossb* And lastly, our good neighbors at Winona arc considering how and where is I heir best way to make connection at La Cro.ssk.Wo considered the question of rati* roads settled for La Crosse, when tho building of Iho great trunk road from here lo Milwaukee became a “fixed fact.” And wo further considered it ai settled that Ln Crosso was to be the grtai wilrond Mrt/rs And emporium of ih® north west, when ilio La Crossed Milwaukee road joined hands with the Root Rim? railroad. Wo have certainly no disposition to brag, and at this tLni© wc dcml fed like getting into a iweat nbo#t olhcr and outside railroad9, that are naturally and necessarily looking to L#i Croue for coiraee* lioa. “Things in working/1 and are all right for its—*o ti • think; nnrt if lh* j TO»©«M» folk* hare 10 I wi*l their n.oks^ «®* down biff* to L* CnMW, it al^ i»*t ntixm.jrti
