JOHN FLORA.On the 14th of last November on the streets of Mitchell, John Flora shot and killed Jesse Burton a farmer residing over the line in Orange county. Last week in the Orange circuit court, Flora' was convicted of murder and sentenced to the penitentiary for life.John Flora intended to shoot Bent Jones and was lying in wait, for him with a double-barreled shot gun, in Shube Burton’s saloon. Jones’ saloon was the first door south of Burton’s and Flora expected him to pass by but Jesse, who came by and was mistaken for Jones, was shot down.Jones’ life has been a stormy one and he has had more turmoil than usually falls to man. Once an .honored citizen filling an enviable position in political and social life, he became entangled in the Moody-Tolliver feud and was sent up for life. He was paroled after seventeen years imprisonment* returned to Mitchell, lived quietly for awhile and then embarked in the saloon business.John Flora, formerly a section hand on the B. O. S-W. Ry. but who had been partially paralyzed and unable to work on the section was installed as bar tender. Disagreements arose andJesse Burton one of the best young men in Orange county was shot while passing along the street attending to his business.Shortly after this, Jones left town and is how living at Natchitoches, La.The crime sent a thrill of horror over Mitchell and the citizens determined to visit the author of it with punishment. It has come to him, notwithstanding delays, continuances and the visitation of a maniac confined in the Paoli jail, who came near saving the expense of a trial. After a trial he is found guilty and given a life sentence but is to have a re-hearing and so the end is not yet.
