CAUGHT AT LAST.An Indiana Swindler and Incendiary Captured in Chicago After Many Years.Chicago inter Ocean.R, K. Pinkerton, of Pinkerton Co. United States Detective Agency, left at 8 o’clock last night for Poseyville, Ind., having in custody Horace Greeley Jacquess, alias Henry G. Fields, alias George Brown. He was arrested on charges of arson and perjury.Horace Greeley Jacquess was bora iD Poseyville, Posey county, Ind., about thirty years ago. During 1881, 1882, and the early part of 1884 he did business there as a grain merchant, and received wheat from various farmers, with the .understanding that when they were ready to sell he was to have preference at the market price. During June and July, 1882, he received from James and Joseph Cale, John C. Smith, and other farmers of that section, about 15,000 bushels of wheat ol storage. Instead of storing it he sold it immediately, but to prevent this from being discovered he put false bottoms in bis granaries. They were reab ly hollow, and contained a few bushels of wheat sprinkled over the boards so as to bide them. He also tilled sacks of wheat placing them so as to make it appear that the granery was tilled to overflowing. By this scheme he succeeded in getting the granary and contents insured for over $1(5,000 in various companies. He then invested in a dozen candles aDd experimeted with them, and about Jan. 1883, he put the remaining caudles in various parts of tbe grocery, saturated everything with coil”oi), cut the ropes attached to the weights used in raising the doors so they could not be opened from the outside, and then he rode to Mt. Vernon, twenty miles away. When he returned the next day he discovered that his large grocery with all the contents had burned. He nogotiated with the insurance companies and settled them for $13,000. He then notified all the farmers who had stored their grain with him t hat on a certain day their eiairns would be paid in full. Before the appointed time arrived Jacquess “skipped.”About two weiks ago V. P. Boseman, of Poseyville, came to Chicago and told Matt W. Pinkerton that he had good reason to believe that Jacquesi was in this city. Two or three days ago the detectives located him at No. 8528 Ellis avenue. He had been living under the name of George Brown since December, and speculated occasionally on the open Board of Trade. It was on coming from there he was arrested on Tuesday. He.was held at No. 204 A Clark street until yesterday, when he was postively indent!fled by Mr. Cale, of Posey county, one of his victims.When confronted by Mr. Cale. Jao-quess acknowledge his guilt. He He said after leaving Indiana he went to Chico, Cal *, and started a store there but failed. In Chico he was known as H. C. Fields* A man named Davis, living near Poseyville, has confessed that Jacquess tried to hire him to burn the granary, and also the residence of Mrs. A. P. Bozeman.Among Jacquess’ effects was a letter thought to be from his father, In which it is alleged that State Attorney Killory and a man named Frey would nolle the two indictments against him in Posey county for $50.
