Alex. Keyt # has never Ijortte a good reputation, and has caused his parents much trouble and the expenditure of a great amount of money. Early last summer he ami his cousins begaif paying their attentions to Mr. Stewart’* daughters, a proceeding which was very disagreeable to Mr. .Stewart, who, however, was unable to prevent it. .Shortly afterward, the second daughter discovered that she was in a condition very unfortunate and declared that Alex Keyes wa* the causeof her disgrace. Alex then skipped outand went to Kansas, where, through the Influence of J. J. Moss, a former Floraite, he obtained a position us clerk iu a hotel. This situation he lost by drinking to excess, and, running short of money, returned to his home, where he obtained employment at railroading aud afterwards at carpentering. \Vhne engaged in the latter pursuit he was arrested upon a charge of bastardy preferred by Miss Stewart, who hail gone to the residence of her sister iu Cass county, and he was taken up there, but compromised the case by consenting to a marriage with his victim. After the eeremouy, which took place a day or two a»Ver their child was born, Keyes returned to Flora. In a day or two he made u proposition to call and spend au evening with Miss Allie Elkenberry, which was indignantly refused. He persisted, however, und went to the Elkenberry residence.
