Finally several youngsters were adopted, but while less charitable people prospered, misfortune overtook the Van Wicklen's.Mrs. Van WLeklen's father died. An undertaker demanded his money before he would prepare the body for burial. Mrs Van Wu’klen post dated a check. When it came due the money was in the bank hut it was not there when the check was written and the woman was arrested. Unable to give bond, she lay in jail 00 days and while she waited, probate court made disposition of her baby— zn adopted chilrl.The foster mother loved the baby and abducted it. Also, she wentback to jail. Now her neighbors want the governor to interfere. Their plan is this:Mrs# Van Wicklen will plead guilty and be sentenced to the penitentiary. They want the governor to grant a pardon and have a friend waiting in court with the pardon, so that Mrs. Van Wicklen will not have to sec the inside of a prison and bo she can return at once to the charitable work of. rearing her adopted children. Her friends regard her love for homeless children as a virtue rather than crime.Price Russell, personal friend of the governor, and a member of the state board of clemency, is in Canton investigating the case and employes of the governor's office are offering wages, winnings to go to the mothers, lb at the governor will grant the pardon.The governor is the father of eleven children.
