YOUTH HELD m . SERIOUS CHARGECharged With Attacking Toung Girl IVftli Criminal Intent. Hearing • Set for .Tnlj- Sffl-h.IRalph Yantle, age :L7 years, resicl-j lug in Bethlehem township was ar-. raigned before Judge James A West in police court today on an affidavit charging assault and battery with intent to commit rape. The affidavit had been filed ’by Miss Marie Stanner, 1(1 years old, who resides with her brother Albert Stanner in Metea. Hearing was postponed until Thursday, July 30th, at 2 p. m., s.nd he was released on 51,000 bond. The alleged j. assault occurred Sunday night along ^ the Michigan pike, two mile? south of 'Metea. Mr. and Mrs. TJ. S. PJouck, and Mr. and Mrs. C. O. James of this city have been summoned as witness es.Young Yantis and the Stanner girl went riding Sunday night. On the return trip home. Yantis, according to the girt .began to press hia attentions on her in an objection able way. She leaped out of the buggy, but returned when he promised to let Her alone. She declares that after she got back, he resumed and she again jumped out. He sprang after It or and her clothing was torn in the struggle. She screamed and her cries were heard by Mr, and Mrs. U. S. Houck, and Mr. and Mrs. .Tamos who were passing in anantomobile. Houck and James raru to her assistance.Houck says that when they appear-ed upon the scene they found the girl in Yantis' arms and he had one hand over her mouth, On seeing them, the 3'otith released the girl and she fell In a faint to the ground. Tbej' placed her in their automobile where she J was revived. She was hysterica] and ! asked to be protected from her companion. She was taken to the home of her brother.No attempt was made to arrest Yantis until yesterday. Witnesses talked with Sheriff Stanley at 4 p. rn. and he decided to investigate. He visited the girl at her home :n Mefcea and after hearing her story brought ' her to Hog an sport and she swore out an affidavit against Yantis. Yantis , was at Fletcher's lake, but relatives j guaranteed tils appearance today.
