Hunter Davis, au old 1 resident of tiie countv, living buck a few miles irotn Sauk, was shot by ono William I Millard and instantly killed. The circum | stances were briefly as follows: jThere had been a personal difficulty be- S tween Davis and MillarJ for some time past. ; growing out of some improper familiarities . on the part of the latter with Davis’ wife,— | Davis bad threatened to kill him, and ca i c j ; into the MUage one day last week, armed ! with a rifle and a bowie-knife for that pur- ! pose, as he avowed. He came upon Millard in a bar-room, drew his knife, and was about to attack him, when the latter begged him j to desist, said he was uot armed, that ho i would make amends for the past, or fight | with him when he was prepared. They fi- / nally agreed to meet in Sauk village last 1 Monday and settle the aff ur in some man- ! ner. Davis went home, and did not return \ till last Thursday, At that time he again ; went to Sauk armed His friends there ad- ; vised him to settle the matter peaeeabv, and peisnacUd h.m to give up his arms.It was propo6elt;l that disinterested arbiters should be elected to determine what reparation Millard should make. They did not j encounter each other daring the day, until ; about U o’clock in the afternoon, At that; time Davis was walkinga’ong the street with • a friend. As they were about passing a i warehouse, a man stopped his companion to j speak with him. The people from the country poured ! I in by tlie wagon, load, determined upon lynching the murderer. The German Military company of Sauk city were called out j to guard the prisoner. The authorities j adopted vigorous measures, and closed all the places where liquor was sold. This power- ,, fill agent for exciting the passions of a mob ' being taken away, the excitement began to | cool down.
