On coming to town noxt murning, witness wo* informed that a man had beeo taken into custody for stealing bit •ponge. Witness than went to the Police OfHce, where the apongea bad bo«*n lodgod, and found them to bo precisely similar to tboae ho bod purchased tbe day prerioua. Ho waa enabled to rocognito aome of the nieces from their peculiar ahape, but there were also other marks by which he could diitiogulah them. Wit rum noticed the vooant space in his pro* miira from which tbo sponges bad been stolen., They wero Abaco spmiges, and very differont from tboae of Androa lal.tnd. He oatimated the value of tbe apongo stolen at nbnut twenty dollars.William Vriak Saunders sworn.—Witness sold a cargo of Abnco apongo to Mr. Jarrottio Juno list, and a day or two afterwards heard that tome of it had been stolen. Bcforo hearing of the theft, how-ever, Mr. F. Smith showed him aome sponge, which witness knew to be from Abaco. and said so at the time. It also very much reiemblcd that which Mr. Jarrett had purchased from him. No other veasol had arrived with Abaco sponge el that time.William Dunthee.— Witness is Mr. J§rreIt's fore-maa, end remembers tho sponge being purchased from Mr. Saunders. Witness examined it at tho time, and afterwards saw the portion that had Lean stolen at Mr. Smith’s. It was the same kind of sponge purchased by Mr. Jarrett. Tho prisoner (who was present) told witness that his fattier hod sent him theajionge from ExumaDarnnby Nieolls —Witness U in the employ of Mr. K. Smith. Bemrrnbers prisoner bringing aorne sacks of sponge to Mr. Smith for sale, which ho said came from Grand Bahama. Tho sponge was put into Mr. Smith’s yard. Oo examining tho sacks, witness immediately discovered that tboy belonged t» Mr, Smith, and had been stolen from his bay-yord the night before.The jury roturnod % vordiot of Guilty.THE GREAT EXHIBITION.
