[From the Detroit Journal of June23.]Ixdiax Was.—A letter, from a gentle-znan at Green Bay of tlio 8lh of June, gives some account of ihe recent rencon-ters between certain of tho Indian tribes, whjph we were permi tied to publish.“I returned about ten days aincc from Prairie des Chiens; while there, a battle TVaa fought between a party of the Menomonee Sioux tribes of Indians, and a par* ty of the Sjcs and Foxes. These tribes have been at war during the winter. Two, days alter my arrival at the Prune, u band ofSioux, 18 in number, came to that place, and jomed by about 40‘ Menomonee*.— They danced the war daifce, and proceeded down the Mississippi about 4 miles, and encamped; the next evening they prlt;* ceedetl to attack tho Fox village, situated at Debnkes mines. Soon after their departure, they discovered a parly of Foxes op shore; they attacked them by surprise, and kilted .or wounded all but three of the seventeen, of which number the party consisted ; of the Sioux, one was killed andthree wounded, one of whom died nextday. Thf attacking party returned to the Prairie the same night flinging and firing about three hundred guna in celebration of lhcir victory. The next day they danced the scalp dance, and displayed an appalling spectacle of scalps, hands, fingers, and skin taken from ttie bodies of their ene mics. The heart of the Fex chief wag roasted, and part eaten by these savages.— The party of the Sacs and Foxes consisted of some of the chiefs and principal men of the nation, who were going to the Pra-lie to offer the pipe of peace to the Mo-nomoucess and Wionebagoes. Their loss is severely fell, but as they and their trills were the first aggressors in the war, they receive but little sympathy. Efficient measures have been taken by the government for the prevention of further blood -shedding among the tribes. You have of course heard i hat a treaty will bp held ftt the Prairie for the settlement of the troubles: this is the only measure which can restore peace, and perhaps prevent the extermination of tho Beveral tribes.11 ’
