Gary Joe Halterman. 27, of Azusa, was let off in front of the store by three companions who then drove to the rear of the store and parked with the car s lights out At about the same time, the kidnap victim, Francis Johnston, of La Verne, entered the store to make a purchase and police Sgt David Cazares drove up in front in a radio cur*Halterman. seeing the police car, quickly left the store, tossing a revolver in the rear of a tow truck parked nearby The woman, who is a school teacher, also was leaving and was forced into her car by Halterman who found that his companions were not in front of the storeThe store night clerk. Hay Nelson, noticed the frightened look on the victim s face and told Cazares who immediately followed her car. He pulled her to a stop at Foothill Boulevard and White Avenue where he freed her and arrested HaltermanMeanwhile, the car containing the other three men drove around in front of the store without headlights and one of the occupants yelled. • Where the hell is he?
