Out of 943 men, of whom 55 per cent, had never had military training before their enrollment, the total loss by death was ninety-eight, or a little more than 10 per cent, of the total strength, while of the actual members of the regiment, who had served in the Massachusetts militia, the number of deaths for the entire year was but forty-seven.The figures have been variously given of the number of men furnished by Massachusetts for United States service in the war with Spain. The number now definitely fixed for thi6 report is 12,225 for all branches of service, of which number 7470 were in the state militia organizations, and 4755 joined the regular service. The card index shows 10,459 men for the army, and 1910 for the navy and marines, the discrepancy being due to lack of returns from the volunteer engineer company enlisted in Massachusetts.
