Vandals pull down quarry gateBY DARREN RIDGLEYA group of determined trespassers pulled down the gate to a Stony Mountain quarry earlier this month, and the RM of Rockwood has had to put in a placeholder barricade until a fix can be made.On July 4, transportation staff in the RM discovered the gate to an RM-owned quarry in Stony Mountain, located on Sellars Hill Road, had been pulled down and its lock was missing.Somebody insisted on getting in there, says Rockwood CAO Grant Thorsteinson.Greg Hryciw, transportation staffer with the RM, says that while the cost to repair the gate itself “isn't bad the first time around, it'll become costly if the act is repeated. If they break it again, then it's going to be more expensive all the time. The gate was lying on the ground when Hryciw and other members of the transportation department arrived to take it away. He says the RM has not bothered to make a police report regarding the incident, since such acts of vandalism are not uncommon.“We get so many of those little things like that, Hryciw says.Until the gate is replaced, the RM has put down a group of large boulders to impede access into the quarry in the meantime.
