Reg.] The forces then present deployed and formed a picket line around the entire grove and sent messengers for help, Audubon men closed their business houses and started for the front. Every livery team was engaged to carry armed men to Elkhorn grove, and farmers eoming to town on business were provided with arms and their teams headed for the scene of action. Wagons were also sent with provisions. Other towns turned out in force, and at dark last night fully 500 armed men must have been picketed around the grove. A picket line was formed entirely around it, the men being stationed but a few feet apart, while a small reserve was in readiness in ease of an outbreak.SHERIFFS IN COMMAND.The lines were in charge of Sheriff Herbert. of Audiiboii. l’ressnall, of lt;’ass, and Littleton of I'olk. The word “Audubon*' was adopted as a countersign, and it was a perilous adventure for any one not possessed of it to pass down the lines.
