Woman shot downtownBY IAN HITCHENA mother of two was taken to Brandon hospital yesterday with a wound to her abdomen following a shooting at a downtown apartment.Her two sons, aged 17 and 13, clutched their heads in distress as paramedics carried their mom on a stretcher from their apartment in a brick house in the 400-block of 10th Street.“My mom just got shot,” the 13-year-old son said quietly as he leaned against a street sign for support.Police were called to the apartment block, located across the street from the back of city hall and near the future site of the new city police station, at 4:42 p.m.About half a dozen officers and at least two members of the Brandon Police Service Forensic Identification Unit were on scene.Police didn’t release the victim’s name, but BPS Sgt. Marc Alain said the 35-year-old was shot once in the abdomen in her third-floor suite.Her sons were inside the apartment when their mom was shot, Alain said, but no one else was injured.Police haven’t found a weapon, but believe the shot was fired from a small-calibre firearm, possibly a rifle.The victim, Alain said, was stable when taken to hospital butCOUN CORNEAU,/BRANDON SUNA man is arrested following a shooting at a house in the 400-block of 10th Street on Tuesday.didn’t know specifics of her condition.He said police detained two men who were found at the residence for questioning and officers were looking for two other people.Last night, police were working to determine a motive, Alain said.A woman who lives in the building said she heard an argument in the victim’s apartment shortly before she heard the shot.She said she was in her own apartment cleaning when she heard people arguing in the upstairs suite where the victim lives with her two sons and husband.“We heard, ‘Why is your ... girlfriend here, what’s she doing here?”’ the neighbour said.She then heard thumping, sounds of a struggle, men yelling and then a gunshot.Bystanders who work and live in the area didn’t seem surprised by the shooting and said illegal drugs are sold out of the apartment block.A man who lives in the area and asked not to be identified said he once bought drugs there.A woman who works nearbysaid she and co-workers have heard arguments there before and spotted numerous people coming and going from the house.“We make a joke about it, it’s the drug house,” she said. “It was just a matter of time ... a shooting or stabbing.“Downtown Brandon has a real problem.However, shootings are rare in Brandon.
