RCMP confirm body that of BMHC patientby GORDON KENT Sun StaffThe man’s body found floating m the Assiniboine River Sunday was that of a 37-year-old mental patient, say Brandon RCMP.The dead man went missing from the Brandon Mental Health Centre (BMHC) on the evening of July 4. said Staff Sgt. Bob Granger.The pyjama-clad man was identified by skull x-rays and dental records, since the body was too badly decomposed for fingerprints, he said.But he refused to give the man’s name, saying it was RCMP policy not to release names in deaths involving mental patients.He said foul play is not suspected in the drowning. The body was apparently in the water for 10 days.Staff Sgt. A1 Barager said police are continuing to look for witnesses. He said the man may have gone m the river at Dinsdale Park.Not locked upBMHC director Garry Mattin said the man’s disappearance is under investigation.He said patients are not locked up. and some are free to roam the grounds.“We are not in a position to supply one staff to each patient,” he said.Terry Meindl of the chief medical examiner’s office said a three-member inquest review committee will decide if an inquest into the death is needed once it gets all police and medical reports.He said the committee looks at all deaths involving people in provincial institutions, but an inquest is not mandatory.Its decision may not come for at least a month, he said.The body was found floating in the river about one kilometre east of Brandon Sunday evening.
