It appears that Sheriff Pat Garrett had ascertained from a sheep herder that “Billy” was prowling around in the vicinity of Fort Sumner, and, acting upon this intelligence, he 1 concluded to visit that place and see if he could effect the art est of the desper- 1 ado. In company with two plucky 1 men, Garrett red® into Sumner about mid-night and ascertained that “Billy” was stopping at the house of a Mexican named Jnan Chavez.
