M. July !5. Editor Optic:—Pat Garrett, the terror of ail evil-doers in this lower country, planted a ball with his unerring deadly aim in the heart of “Billy, the Kid” last night about midnight. Pat had come up to Sumner on account of ao in*ny rumors reaching him that the “Kid” was lurking in that place or vicinity. About the hour mentioned, he rode up near the town and in company with John W. Poo and T. M. Mekiuney, started on an exploring expedition. Pat went into Mr. Pole Maxwell’s room to get what nows he could of the “Kid,” and he had not been there two minutes before the “Kid,” in his stocking feet, entered the room and walking up to the bed (on the edge of which Pat was sitting talking to Maxwell), with a pistol (self-oocker) in one hand and a Ng butcher-knife in the other, Pat reached behind him for his pistol and at the action “Kid” dropped his pistol on him aud asked in Spanish jQuien e»t iQuienesf” This delay in tiring on the “Kid’s” part gave Pat all the time he needed, and the words were barely uttered before Pat’s dauntless courage had driven a ball through the centre of the “Kid’s” heart.
