PORT HURON. Mich.. July 17 — The Rev. Wilson W. Culp is on his way back to opilng Valley. O.. today Tor unbarring the doors of love. In his eyes are no frozen tears of repentance. In irons lie was put aboard a tram last night bound for Xcni*; Ohio where he v ill be held until his trial. jEsther Hughes, with whom he eloped four mouths ago and for whom heabandoned his Wife and nine children, was released yesterday.Both Miss Hughes and her mother pleaded for the release of the pastor who, accotd'.ng to his own declaration, “was commanded by God** to dope with the girl.“Let me serve in his place,** shecried m the Po t Huron jail just before he was started back home. “He did no wrong Let me suffer if any-, one has to. I still love him. love him more now, more madly than ever.“They always said it was the woman who paid.” said Esther. “But they are revering the law of the ages. They are making the man pay. ( Ho is gmr e-s. i ins.sicd on coming away with him. He did no wrong— could do no wrong'* And then the mother, Mrs. Blanche Hughes, wifeof T. J. Hughes, prominent money lender of Greenville, Ohio, who came up to reclaim her wandering girl* spoke up:“I came here fully in**ending to,punish this man to the law's limit/* she said slowly. “But after an all-night talk with Esther, who has told me all, I am going now to do my utmost to see that he is freed. They were indiscreet, brt that is all. Yes.I know they regiFtered in severalplaces as man and wife an doecupiedthe same room together, but mydaughter tells me that the relations1 were ne\or illicit. I know this will seem strange to many but it is the truth. Esther never told me a fib/*The girl's black eyes blazed. “Hewas so unhappy/’ she said. “1 insisted on going with him. And so I went with him. I spent every moment with him. I slept in his arms at night. But ll* no’.o,r did anything but caress me and where he went I went. I want the world to know 11 love him/* ,“My most Dearest and Precious Wilson—more precious than ever before/* begins a letter written to Culp* by Miss Hughes Sunday afternoon* when he was enroute to Xenia. Thereis no sign of repentance nor of diminished affection in the ardent love note. A poem—or a hymn—obviously of her own composition is quoted in full, opening with the words: “Does Jesus care when I've said good-bye/* *To the dearest on earth to me/* and ' “my sad heart aches.—till it nearly breaks.**“is :t aught to him:“Does he see?“I tried to sing these words, the ( he*5! I could thru the t rs in my ores/* wrote the girl “I suppose you are in handcuffs now. I wish it mild be me instead of yon “ In these words Miss Hughes expresses her belief that “Jesus is coming re*t poor. Tfc* main thing is to he ready for heaven, and dearest will you meet methere?**
