The first postoffice that I ever remember was located on Broadway at the site of the present Colonial theater. Judge Groves, postmaster, was the sole and only employe. In fact, they didn’t need any more for the mail only came in twice aVweek from Indianapolis.It was brought on horsebackor by stage coach. The roads were very poor, being mostly swamps so it was a long and difficult journey in those days. Changes of horses had to be made several times.Rural delivery was a thing unheard of and eity carriers were not even known until some time later. This was along time before the days of postage stamps too. It w'as a good deal more expensive too for it was necessary to pay 10 cents to get the delivery of aletter.The site of the postoffice was ch'anged nine times before it was finally moved to the present location. The second change was further up on Broadway to where the Standard Meat Market is now located. Next the postoffice was moved to Market street between the alley and-Fourth streets. It was then changed to the site of the fire department on Sixth St. Jorden Vigus was postmaster at this time. ...The next move was to Broad-way where the lower 10 centstore is located. Bill Wilson and Elliott Ewing wrere postmasters. Market street above the alley on the north side between.second and third streets was the next location of the postoffice when Dr. Powell was postmaster. It was then changed to the corner of Pearl and Wall streets with E. N. Talbot and Dan Tomlinson as postmasters. Next it was moved to the site of Wagner’s cigar store on Broadway with Tom Bring-hurst postmaster. Again it was changed to Market street between Second and Third streets, where the Killian McClosky undertaking parlors are located, when Bill Moss was postmaster.
