Mysterious Drowning of Two Orphan Girls. WILlesxarre, Pa., July 17.—About 9:30 last night Walter Lane, 18, accom panied by Miss Katie and Mary Mc Gown, aged 23 and 20 years, was out rowing on the Susquehanna river, a short distance below the depot bridge. The young ladies were drowned. Lane's story of the accident is that the bottom of the boat came out, and that the boat filled with water so rapidly that it sank before he could reach shore. He says he struggled with the girls in an effort to land them, but was unable to do 90, and that in order to save himself, he struck out for shore about twenty feet distant. The corpses of the girls were found about one hundred feet from the place where they sank. The girls were orphans, and were brought from Ireland by Mr. McGowan, an uncle residing in Avoca, with whom they lived. An examination of the boat reveals the fact that the bottom has not fallen out. It has been ascertained also that Lane's clothing, excepting his trousers, was not wet. These facts created an unfavorable impression, and Lane was taken into custody and will have a hearing. No reason for foul play is given.
