Former CountyResident DeadJack Reed, 20, of 411 Wells avenue, N; E., Roanoke, killed Friday when leaping* from his automobile, after it had been wrecked,was a resident of Pulaski county for madly years prior to moving to Roanoke. It is said that he was born in this county and has msny relatives now living in this section. - The accident occurred on the Lee highway near Dixie caverns, about eight miles west of Salem after Reed had been pursued for several miles by officers. According to acting coroner, Dr. Jack Smiley, the victim's skull 1 was fractured, both legs were broken and he suffered internal injuries from the terrific impact which tossed him upon the front of the officer's car.Reed, driving a late model roadster accompanied by an unidentified companion was sighted by the officers as he passed through Salem, it was said by Chief of Police W. A. Vest, of Salem. Frier sus-i pected the car of transporting li-j, quor and immediately gave chase. As he pulled beside the machine on West Main street, calling for Reed to halt, the latter ‘gave her the gas and fled down the road.After leaving the city streets, the cars sped westward along the state highway at a speed as high as 75 miles an hour, it was said. Just before Reed was killed, the liquor laden machine crashed into a guard rail near the ibanks of the Roanoke river, tearing out seven of the posts. It then sfwung across the road and landed in the ditch. Reed left the machine to flee into a nearby com field but before he could make the trip across the road he was struck by the speeding police car.:
