H IM.I 1)1 \.\ RICFIYFS GIFTI ROM CRIMINAL[ Some time ago Hugh A. Dunn,I of Beckley, former judge of the | Raleigh county criminal court, ecevied a cane—and therein lies story. It was not so much the J gift as the spirit of the giver which j rather nonplussed the judge, forthe maker and donor of the sticka as Matherly Farley, who was sentenced to a life term in the j state penitentiary by Judge Dunn. Judge Dunn wrote a letter ofthanks for the cane, a beautiful-pecimen of woodworkers art. i Farley, after fashioning the shaft of the cane from hickory, shaped thin steel rod into the curve he desired the handle to have and inserted the rod into the endof the shaft. On this rod he slipped alternate rings of hickory ; and Cirassian walnut, and fitted these rings so artfully that the ioints between them can scarcely I be discerned.
