LENGEL SHOWS HAND•‘Jlggs** Wise. sergeant of police and catcher of bootleggers extraordinary, yesterday received a 30-day suspension from the force without pay. Chief Lengel took summary action when he was told that Sergeant Wise was under the Influence of liquor early Tuesday morning after a car Which he was driving was In a collision. The surprise lies not in the fact that Wise has fallena victim of Chief Longer* operations, hut rather that the chief would be so brazen In his method of trying to discredit Sergeant Wise. One wouldhave thought the chief would have found some better grounds upon which to take action against his much disliked officer.It is understood that Safety Director Hexamer is taking a hand in the affair and will give Wise a hearing on Friday morning. The facts In the case will come out at that time and the public will know whether there is any basis for thesuspension given Sergeant Wise, or whether it Is another piece of spite work on the part ofChief Lengel.Tn fairness to Sergeant Wise It should be saidthnt he doe* not use liquor, and that he reportedfor duty yesterday morning only ten minuteslate and put the entire day In cm his Job. Onthe face of the case It would appear that aneffort has been made to discredit Wise whoseactivities in apprehending law violators havebeen entirely too Intensive and covered too widea territory to please the bootleggers and their friends.
