A new “rookie” reported for duty yesterday with the Harrisonburg Police DepartmentHis name?, “Rinty” is his name and though he is very young, 11 months, Chief Ritchie is confident that, in time, “Rinty” will do the job.“Rinty” is a German police dog and was donated to the Harrisonburg Police Department here through the efforts of officer Alan Norvelle of the Elkton Police Department.Hopes To Get AnotherChief Ritchie said yesterday that he has been seeking a police dog for the Harrisonburg Police Department for some time and he is very pleased to have the dog. He pointed out that he hopes, in time, to obtain another dog for the department so that four With four officers working with two dogs this would permit the department to have an officer on duty around the clock who could work with one of the two dogs.Harrisonburg is among the many Virginia cities and towns who have supplemented their police department with dogs. Elkton has had a police dog aiding members of the department and Police Chief Walter Norvelle has been very satisfied with the results.May Go To State SchoolWhile “Rinty” officially checked in at the Harrisonburg Police Department headquarters hereyesterday he must undergo training in the very near future before going on duty. Chief Ritchie said yesterday that he has not yet reached a decision on w'here “Rinty” will receive his training. He said that a number of dogs are being assigned to the Virginia State Police. He said that these dogs must undergo training and that he is in hopes that “Rinty” can be enrolled in one of these classes. If this is not possible, arrangements will have to be made to have the dog trained elsewhere.After looking’over police headquarters most of the day yesterday and holding a “press conference”, “Rinty” was taken to Dr. 0. F. Foley, Veternarian, for in-noeulations, etc.“Does the movement of the police dog to Dr. Foley,” someone asked Chief Ritchie, “indicate that he has passed his mental examination and must now undergo his physical examination?”Chief Ritchie went along with the gag and replied:“Yes, I guess so.”At present the Harrisonburg Police couldn’t be worried about gags—-he wants most now to get “Rinty” off to school and back to aid the officers here in their police work.iFIRST CENSUSFirst U.S. census in 1790 showed a population count of 3.929,214 persons.
