SELECTING JUREfIN SYKES CASESIt( Out of sixteen veniremen examined ' j ly counsel this morning in the justice’s court only three acknowledged to being connected with any religious organization or church. This transpired in an attempt to obtain a jury to try the case of Joshua Sykes, leader of the Church of the Living God and pastor of the Tabernacle of David. Sykes is charged with the violation of a city ordinance which prohibits the erection and maintenance of a tent without a permit is obtained from the city council.Theodore Bell of San Francisco, an attorney of statewide reputation, appeared for Svkes and from *t(je tenor of the questions, which he ad'drcssed ‘ j to the talesmen, he will probably contend that the ordinance under which the defendant is charged is unreasonable, unjust and unconstitutional. Bell informed the court that Svkes would not endeavor to evade the responsibility of erecting and maintaining tl\e tent.Today’s proceedings were confinedc | to the selection of a jury. Both B. D. Marx Greene, who appeared for the people, and the defendant’s counsel, closely questioned the talesmen ascertaining whether or not they were biased either against the ordinance or against the cult of which Sykes is the leader. Judge Aaron Turner was several times called upon to make decisions as to the admission of certain questions.rIIyact-i-eC r %The veniremen examined this morn-i ^r-I _*yyynr\sc5-)f1Ct,asreding were, J.
