Robert E. Fowler, 24, Fruit-dale, was found guilty of the July 31, 1967, robbery of the Vallonia branch of the Citizens State Bank of Brownstown by a U. S. District Court jury in Indianapolis Wednesday.The jury deliberated for approximately two and one-half hours before delivering its verdict at 6 p. m. District Court Judge James E. Noland ordered a pre-sentence investigation and announced he would sentence Fowler at a later date.Fowler could be sentenced to as much as 20 years in a federal penitentiary and fined $5,000 for the crime.Federal Attorney Robert Baker, Bloomington, called 10 witnesses to support the government’s contention that Fowlerwas the man who robbed the bank of $200 in $1 bills shortly before 3 p. m. July 31.Kamman TestifiesJohn Kamman, president of the Citizens State Bank of Brownstown, testified the bank's deposits were insured by the federal government. His testimony was used to show that robbery of the bank wasa federal crime.Harry L. Johnson, branch manager, described the robber, the shotgun used and the auto used for the getaway. Mrs. Cleo Hartley, bank secretary, identified Fowler as the gunman.Leslie H. Burnett, of near Vallonia, who entered the bank as the gunman escaped, also described the clothing worn by the robber and the car usedin the escape.Ivory TestifiesJim Ivory, Jackson County deputy sheriff, testified he had chased the getaway car to a county road near Tampico where the robber escaped into a cornfield.Sergeant Technician Maurice L. Wright, of the Seymour state police post, testified he had taken fingerprints from the getaway car and FBI Special Agent George Asdell identified the shotgun and sweater introduced as evidence as comingfrom the getaway car.Fingerprints of the defendant taken in Memphis, Tenn., by FBI Special Agent Robert Brunner were found to be the same as those found in the car according to James Walker, FBI fingerprint expert.James H. Ledbetter, Trafal-ger, also testified he had seen the defendant and the same type of gun used in the holdup in the same automobile prior to the robbery.Stanley Miller, Morgantown, the only witness called by the defense attorney, William Thoms, Indianapolis, said he had been the defendant's employer in July, 1967, and he had given him money the Saturday before the robbery.However, upon cross e*-am mat ion, Miller testified that the defendant had not appeared for work on the morning of the robbery URGE FIREARM PERMITSWASHINGTON (AP) — Rep John Brademas of South Bend, Indiana’s 3rd District congressman. was among 47 Democratic House members who urged the chamber's leadership Wednesday to support legislation requiring registration and licensing of firearms.
