Green Replies With a Shotgun, Wounding One.#*Springfield, 111., July 11.—Governor Yates' has ordered state troops to Eldorado to protect colored citizens there from persecution and assault. This action was taken upon receipt of a letter from A. P. Green, pastor i of the African Methodist Episcopal church at Eldorado, in which Green described an attack upon his house by a mob, and in whiclj thirty-six shots were fired into the house anu many stones thrown. Green replied .with a shotgun, and believes he wounded Jbne member of the mob.Theodore Ewert, assistant adjutant general, has been placed in charge of the situation at Eldorado, Gov. Yates deciding to relieve Sheriff Baxter of further responsibility.After ordering Col. Ewart to Eldorado, Capt. Satterfield of company F, fourth infantry, located at Mount Vernon, was ordered to report to Go). Ewert there with a detail of sixteen men chosen from his company.Gov. Yates refused to discuss his«■#action, which is the result of his criticism of Sheriff Baxter a few days ago.Baxter Hits Back.An open letter to Gov. Yates from Sheriff Baxter was received The sheriff states that he feels it imperative to vindicate the fair name of Saline county and justify himself in the eyes of the public, 'lie says.“If in doing so and a plain statement of facts convicts your excellency of mendacity, there Is no citizen of the state who regrets it more than I do”He states that on June 17 he received a telegram from Gov Yates asking for information and that ho mailed the particulars at once He received a letter from the private secretary of Gov Yates on June 18, acknowledging the receipt of this letter.
