U. G. M'MILLAN SHOTAnd Instantly Killed by Julius Metzner in a Drunken Frenzy—funeral Largest in 'Humboldt,Julius Metzner. Sr,t shot and killed Marshal Ulysses* G, McMillen last Sunday morning, the corner of Parker and Kearney streets* by the Pick net I and Wilson residences. Mr. McMillen was killed almost Instantly* being' shot with a shot gun, seme of the abo* evidently penetrating his heart. The circumstances that led up tothekllllntr are as near as can be learned, as follows: For snme days past Julius Mettner has been on one of his usual sprees, and had abused his family almost Intolerably. He had come home the night in question, very quarrelsome and abusive, and had, just before the tragedy, thrown an earthen vessel at his wife and narrowly' missed killing her. Mrs. Metzner had stated that she was going after the marshal, and report says that Mr. Metzner declared that if the marshal came near him he would kill him. When Mrs. Metzner left the house, Mr. M. also left, but went to the milt and got a shot gun and six Hhells loaded with No. 1 shot. He evidently lay lit wait for his victim. In the mean time Mrs. Metzner had reached the Russell House and found night watchman Me-Mlllen, He accompanied her to her home, but Mr. M, was not found. The marshal then looked around the premises and failing to find his man, started toward the mill, followed by Ida Metzner who had warned him that her father had gone to get a shot gun and would shoot. Miss Metzner says she saw the flash of the guti and heard the report, but ran home to get her shoes, being then walking in a pair of house slippers, Mrs. G. W, Wilson, before whose house the tragedy occurred, was awakened in the night by voices, but says that she could not distinguish what was said. Then came the report of a gun, followed by a voice which she recognized as Mr. Metzner’s, crying out rather In anguish than triumph, “I’ve done it,” “I've done it.M She awakened the household, and ivlthin thirty seconds they were all upon the scene. In front of the house lying on his side, with the death rattle then sounding in his throat, was U. G. McMillen. As Mr. Wilson and wife ran toward the prostrate man, Mr. Metzner was seen to pass the corner of the Ricknell lot and hurry toward his homo. Mr. McMillen died almost instantly, After ascertaining that the marshal was beyond help, Verne Wilson mounted his wheel and rode after Marshal Sheldon who was at his residence near the river. He was awakened and at once began a search for the murderer. He was found returning from the river, dripping wet, and was immediately placed in the county jail where he now is. According to the prisoner’s story he went directly to the mill after leaving the house, and secured his shot gun and shells. Hj was returning looking for the man' 1, and says when lie met him lie {...Hzner} was standing by Wilson’s barn. He called to McMillen asking if it was George Shockley, the light being yet uncertain (3:40 a. m.). McMillen answered “no,11 and Metzner then askeil if it was Sheldon, and McMillen answered 4'yes. *' Upon hearing the reply Metzner leveled his gun aud called “Look out, I am goiug to shoot,” and fired. Realizing what he had done, he ran home and left his gun, and started for the river to drown himself. He jumped in and the chill of the water brought him to his senses and m;\de him realize that his victim might not be mortally wounded, so he started again toward the scene of his crime determined to stand the consequences. Upon approaching Marshal Sheldon his first words were to know if Mr. McMillen was dead. He was told that it was immaterial to him whether he was dead or alive, and to “come on,” Upon the way to the jail he asked his captor probably fifty times if McMillen was dead, and wanted the county sheriff to get the very best doctor and have the wounded man well looked after. In other cities the steam that Algona is wasting is used to heat public buildings, and in many places to accommodate private heating plants. If the city accepts the Durdall proposal it will pipe so as to heat the court house also, and reach State street in such a way as to be ready to heat business houses. In this way the town can make a beginning towards a public heating plant, equally desirable as public lighting,—U. D. M.Just received a new carload of bes1 quality of Michigan salt.
