A NEWBUKG TRAGEDY.Killing of a Negro.[Evansville Courier.]We learned yesterday from a gentleman residing at Newburg of a very distressing affair which took place during last week in that town. Many persons who have frequented the city buildings and the police headquarters, will recollect an old negro vagabond who used to spend the most of his leisure time about Third and Walnut streets. The old fellow had no home, and on account of an extreme fondness for a drop,” was a chronic sort of lock-up resident.Too old to work, he made a few dimes by imitating, with amazing accuracy, the crow and actions of a rooster. He was known as Crowing Charley, bat his name was Charles Hall. About three weeks ago, lie went to Newburg, and there met his fate. Last Tuesday, a young fellow named Henry Martin was drunk, and commenced to tease old Hall, whom he wanted to crow. Hall moved away and Martin threw a stone at him. Crowing Charley threw it back and came near hitting Martin. The latter then picked up a sharp stone and threw it at the aged negvo with much force, striking him on the head, cutting a gash, and stunning him.Since that time, the old negro has been insensible, and on Friday evening died from the injuries received. The coroner held an inquest and ordered the arrest of Martin, \yho was placed in the lock-up, no bail being fixed. Martin is but seventeen years of age and is the'son of worthy German parents. Old Hall was Married, but like families of many of his race tliey are scattered in every direction.ii.1rJ
